Who out there would like to come out for a really fun night for a very affordable $25?
If this applies to you, then don’t miss the first annual Wing Madness 2010, being held April 7 at Dick’s Last Resort, 315 N. Dearborn. I’m telling you early, because tickets are going fast.
That night, 18th District cops and firemen from around the city will square off in a chicken wing eating contest, to benefit the River North-based Make-A-Wish Foundation.
It should be a wild night, with Mancow Muller emceeing, and Secretary of State Jesse White, Ald. Ed Burke (14th) and Janet Wilmoth, editorial director of Fire Chief Publications, judging.
Oh yeah, I’m also a judge. Can you imagine, me rubbing shoulders with the big boys for the night?
The event all started with Jason Baumann and Kathy Posner, who sit on a couple of boards together. Baumann is the “computer guy” for Make-A-Wish, and also a volunteer wish grantor. He decided he wanted to raise money to grant one wish, about $5,000.
In December, Posner was attending the annual holiday party for local school children that Dick’s throws, and some firemen came to deliver bikes for the kids. Posner was talking to the firemen, who were eating chicken wings, when 18th District Commander Ken Angarone walked in.
Posner brought the commander to the firemen’s table to introduce him, and they started trash-talking fun over the wings.
“I said, ‘Why not do a wing contest for Make-A-Wish?’” recalled Posner, who hopes to grant three wishes.
“It’s really like Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, ‘Let’s put on a show,’” she said.
Posner, a Streeterville resident, signed on Burke, the powerful Southwest Side alderman, and White, who attends the annual Dick’s holiday party. I write about the Dick’s party each year, so that’s how I fit in. Counseling contestants as they overeat wings will be celebrity doc and fitness guru Dr. Ian Smith. And there’s more: Rep. Jack Franks (D-Woodstock) sponsored a resolution in the Illinois House proclaiming April 7 as Wing Madness Day.
The cops and firemen will compete in two contests: “How Many Wings Can You Eat?” and “How Hot Can You Go?” The latter will have participants eating increasingly fiery wings. Winners get a weekend at The Palmer House.
Your $25 gets you food, soft drinks and music from the band, No Direction. There’ll be raffle prizes from Horseshoe Casino and more.
Everything was donated, so 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish, which grants wishes to kids with life threatening illnesses.
“I’m hoping I’m gonna make $10,000,” Posner said.
So come on down, because with all these firemen around, you know it’s going to be one hot night.

LEGENDARY LANDMARKS Congrats to Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks; Chicago Marathon founder Lee Flaherty; and award-winning actor and director Harold Ramis. All are being honored as “Legendary Landmarks” Saturday at Landmarks Illinois’ 5th annual Legendary Landmarks Gala at The Palmer House.
Ramis was his usual humorous self about the honor.
“I’m incredibly honored to be ‘landmarked’ and to make even a small contribution to the preservation of Illinois’ architectural treasures,” he said. “Tours of me will be conducted 9 to 5 everyday except Mondays.”
Emcee is Bob Sirott, event co-chairs Joe Antunovich and Madeline Gelis. For more details, call 312-922-1742.
