This time of year, if you ask farmer Jeannine Kalvaitis what was good at her Streeterville market stall, she will tell you it’s all fresh-picked and delicious. But, if pressed, she’ll admit it’s the candy onions, the watermelon and the tomatoes that are best this week. That the northeast Indiana family farm has vine-ripened tomatoes and perfectly toned watermelon to bring into Chicago’s city and neighborhood markets this year is a minor miracle.

Police nab armed robber

Police arrested a man suspected of robbing a woman at gunpoint on the 100 block of W. Maple on the evening of September 3. The 21-year old woman and a witness relayed to police that the man, 27, had approached her and stated “Give me your purse or I’ll shoot you,” while pressing the barrel of a silver gun against her stomach.

Facing a Nov. 22 deadline for filing nominating petitions, contenders for the alderman’s seat in the 43rd ward are out knocking on doors and scrambling to position themselves on the issues. Ald. Vi Daley’s recent announcement that she will retire after a decade of service has left an open playing field. Martin J. Oberman, a long-time Lincoln Park resident and former alderman (1975-1987), observed that some recurring local issues will factor heavily in voters’ minds as they approach the February city elections.
