The Plastics Pioneers Association recently announced they have named four new members to their organization, According to PlasticsNews.com. The Plastic Pioneers Association (PPA) is a non-profit organization based in McHenry, IL, and contains over 200 members. Every member has at least 25 years of experience in the plastic industry and the new inductees are no exception.
The PPA is dedicated to preserving the history of the industry and one of their primary modes of doing this is through scholarship awards to students who are interesting in a career in plastics. From their website, their states goals include:
“To recognize achievements in the fields of plastics and/or polymer science, engineering, technology, education, sales/marketing, or management. To support industry-wide educational programs. To promote the study and improvement of plastics and/or polymer science, engineering, and technology in the Plastics Industry.”
The group announced the four new members (two men and two women) at their annual spring meeting, which was held in Florida. Here is a brief synopsis of each new member and their career achievements.
Aline Alroy was one of the two women to be welcomed into the group. Alroy is currently the vice president of sales at a Hackensack, N.J.-based manufacturer of polymer filtration systems, High-Technology Corp.
In addition to her time spent there, Alroy has served on the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc.’s Equipment Council and has held various other roles related to the industry.
One of the other new members is Kenneth Pawluck, a plastics and mechanical engineering manager at Pleasanton, Calif.-based Natus Medical Inc. Pawluck is an established inventor/innovator in the industry as he currently holds 23 patents (three pending) of his own. For this kind of work he has been recognized by RandD Magazine and Injection Molding Magazine.
Pawluck was also the chair of SPE’s Product Design and Development and Rotational Molding divisions. Rotational molding is a unique, four-stage method that uses heat to mold resin in a plastic mold. He also owned his own consulting firm for about eight years that specialized in plastics, medical, commercial and industrial product design, development and root cause failure analysis.

This isn’t the first time Latoya King has tangled with the law, but perhaps for her sake it will be the last.
According to ABC 7 Chicago, King, 32, was pulled over at approximately 2:30 a.m. a couple of Saturdays ago in the 3200-block of Harlem in Riverside for speeding. She subsequently failed six field sobriety tests and a plastic cup of Remi Martin was found in her vehicle, according to police.
King ultimately took a breathalyzer and blew a 0.16 blood-alcohol level, which is twice the legal limit. It was at about this time that King started to get violent.
Riverside police officials provided the following account of the events that transpired during King’s booking:
“While she was being fingerprinted and booked, she broke away from the officers and started to kick and punch the live scan booking machine. She then started to violently fight with the arresting officers in the booking room. She punched, kicked and spit directly in one of the officer’s face, mouth, eyes and nose. This fight continued in such a violent manner that the Riverside 911 Center asked for assistance in the booking room. The Lyons Police Department dispatched personnel to assist Riverside.”
The police officer who was directly assaulted was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. He was released later that morning with no reported serious injuries or conditions.

In an attempt to ease qualms about the legitimacy of healthcare provided at walk-in clinics, CVS has decided to share the medical information of patients who use their walk-in clinics with the University of Chicago. The retail giant provides clinical support, medication counseling, chronic disease monitoring, and wellness programs at the medical clinics associated with their pharmacies.
The walk-in health clinics run by CVS are called MinuteClinic. These institutions act as an urgent care for patients looking for medical attention when it’s unavailable from their primary doctor.
According to pharmacytimes.com, a press release outlined CVS’s affiliation with the University of Chicago as an attempt to “enhance access to high-quality, affordable health care services for patients.” CVS will be providing prescription and visit information to the university through their electronic health record systems.
This decision comes at the tail-end of Walgreens announcement of the sale of their Chicago-area walk-in clinics to Downers Grove-based Advocate Health Care. According to the Chicago Tribune, this decision was made in a continued attempt to improve operations among their health clinics.
While the specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed, all 56 locations of Walgreens’ in-store clinics have been sold to Advocate.
By continuing to outsource clinical operations, Walgreens hopes to continue to provide access to healthcare for patients who wish to avoid the emergency room. Considering only 29% of primary care physicians offer evening hours, many patients go to walk-in clinics because they can’t be seen by their primary physician.
The new pharmacy programs also aim to unify the country’s healthcare services.
“We are pleased to work with these exceptional health care providers throughout the country to develop collaborative programs that enhance access to patient care, improve health outcomes and lower health care costs in the communities they serve,” said Troyen A. Brennan, MD, Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health. “By allowing our electronic health records and information systems to communicate and share important information about the patients we collectively serve, we will have a more comprehensive view of our patients, which can aid in health care decision making and help ensure patients adhere to important medications for chronic diseases.”

The editorial condemns the entire operation, from the reclamation district’s managers to the oil company’s executives.
Just how bad is the pollution? In February, federal workers were observing an oil spill cleanup on land leased by Olympic Oil. That would have been bad enough, except the workers accidentally stumbled on something worse: 50,000 gallons of antifreeze spilled over eight acres. The unreported spill was the company’s fourth known spill in just nine years.
The reclamation district owns 10,000 acres of land along Chicago-area waterways, land it’s officially tasked with protecting from pollution. In reality, much of that land is leased to oil refineries, antifreeze manufacturers, and asphalt plants. These activities are vital to our regional economy; an estimated 94% of the 2.6 million miles of paved roads in the U.S. is covered in asphalt, for instance. But critics say Olympic Oil has been allowed to pollute Chicago waterways with impunity, and many local leaders say enough is enough.
Andy Shaw, the CEO of the Better Government Association, recently recommended hiring an official inspector with the authority to investigate the reclamation district’s management. And the Sun-Times editorial harshly criticized the oil company, which has an annual budget in excess of $1 billion, yet claims it can’t afford to pay for water cleaning projects. The editorial’s harshest scorn was reserved not for the tenants, but for the district and its administrators.
“[The] district pays nine part-time commissioners at least $70,000 a year, and it pays a number of staffers more than $200,000 a year…But in yet another indication of poor management, a spokesman for the district told Shaw that an ‘external auditor’ had decided that an inspector general ‘would not be recommended.’ Meanwhile, the district cleans water with one hand while leasing land to polluters with the other.”

Chicago city officials are warning homeowners about “rogue plumbers” who have been operating out of a building in the Canaryville neighborhood.
At least three different people have run businesses under several different names out of the building, located on the 700-block of West 47th Street, but there’s one thing they have in common: There are no business licenses registered to that address, and the plumbers in question face allegations of code violations and consumer fraud. Businesses at that location have been fined approximately $167,000 since 2008.
“In this particular case, we have fines for three different individuals using two different business names, and this same address has a pattern of bad practices,” Maria Guerra Lapacek, a commissioner for the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, told the local ABC affiliate July 23.
In one recent case, resident John McCartney paid $10,000 for an emergency plumbing repair to a company called Wagner and Sons. But when he filed a claim, his insurance company said the repair should have cost only $1,800.

On Thursday, July 9, the U.S. Department of Transportation released new data revealing that a stunning 73% of roads throughout Illinois are now in poor or mediocre condition.
According to WREX, this is significantly worse than the national average; across the country, approximately 65% of roads are in poor or mediocre condition.
Additionally, 16% of Illinois’ bridges are now either structurally deficient or structurally obsolete, the Department of Transportation found.
Rough roads offer more than just a bumpy ride — they can cost drivers thousands of dollars in extra vehicle repairs each year. Roads in this condition cost American drivers an additional $335 each year in repairs; for drivers in large cities, these costs reach $746.
The Department of Transportation’s research found that Illinois drivers spend $2.4 billion each year on extra vehicle repairs stemming from rough roads and potholes, or about $292 per driver.
The U.S. DOT claimed that roads in Illinois are in such poor condition because of the state taking short-term measures rather than setting up long-term funding for more substantive road repairs.
At the same time, the state of Illinois is focusing on more frivolous projects, such as the $1.5 million it spent to create “The Driving Dead,” a series of videos intended to raise awareness about the rate of fatal car crashes in Illinois.
According to the Watchdog Arena, the Illinois Department of Transportation has been creating these videos, based on the popular TV series “The Walking Dead,” with money taken directly from its road repair fund.
To raise the money needed for the road repairs themselves, the state is now considering a gas tax increase — despite the fact that Illinois residents already spend $4 billion in state, federal and local gasoline taxes per year.
“The question every taxpayer should be asking is why is IDOT using road fund money to make movies instead of using it to fix the roads,” Watchdog Arena wrote.

Chicago-based business 1871 recently announced that it’s launching a new project called the Chicago Bitcoin Center, which will aim to research the use of bitcoins in Chicago and developing secure networks for transferring bitcoins and other forms of digital currency.
According to reports from the Chicago Tribune and Inside Bitcoins, the Chicago Business Center is a “bitcoin-focused incubator” and the team will work with other tech startups to develop safer methods of transferring bitcoins, along with increased investments toward block chain technology.
The Center was announced at the Inside Bitcoins Conference in Chicago and was launched on Friday, July 10. CEO Howard A. Tullman recently told the Chicago Tribune that the use of digital currency is rising — even Citibank announced that it’s developing its own digital currency called Citicoin.
“When you have the biggest banks in the world starting to acknowledge that this is a viable currency and everybody has to be involved in it, we think it’s going to have implications for our companies,” Tullman stated.
Online consumer purchases are already driving the economy in the U.S., with around $1.2 million spent via e-commerce shopping platforms every 30 seconds, and an estimated $140 billion worth of mobile shopping sales generated by 2019.
The Center has already pulled together an impressive team of financial and tech experts, including Don Wilson, founder and CEO of DRW Trading, and Matthew Roszak, CEO of the Chicago Bitcoin Center and a founding partner at the Chicago-based Tally Capital.
Participating startups already include Glidera, which provides merchant payment processing systems for bitcoins, and Red Leaf, which is currently implementing bitcoin ATMs throughout Chicago.
