California has had numerous devastating fires in the past few years, and flames have ravaged many homes and communities. Fortunately, as described by Kevin O’Connor in this helpful video, there are a few key ways that homeowners can help protect their properties.
1. Roofing
To protect against embers that carry on the wind, homeowners can install non-combustible roofing, such as asphalt, to help prevent ignition.
2. Siding
Siding should also be non-combustible, such as vinyl siding, to prevent ignition if embers build up along the bottom. However, if you don’t want to replace all of your siding, consider only replacing the bottom six inches.
Adding rock mulch around the first five feet of the perimeter of your house can also help prevent ignition. This is preferable to wooden mulch, which can act as kindling.
4. Trees
If you have a lot of dense trees that are 30 feet or closer to your home, you should also keep them well-trimmed to prevent a large-scale fire from spreading.
Using these tips, you can help keep your home as safe as possible this fire season.
