The legendary soul, gospel, and civil rights icon Mavis Staples will headline a performance event at Fitzgerald’s on Saturday November 20, 2021.

Mavis Staples has been entertaining audiences for nearly 70 years. Mavis Staples started her career in Chicago performing with her family in local churches as The Staple Singers. After signing to Stax Records in 1968, The Staple Singers married their gospel heritage to the more mainstream soul music of the day. As a result, the Staple Singers scored several Top 40 singles and became one of the voices of the civil rights movement. After the dissolution of The Staple Singers, Mavis Staples stayed true to her mid-Western roots by collaborating with Prince on a series of albums in the late 1980s. Recently she came back home to Chicago by working with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy on 2017’s If All I Was Was Black. The Mavis Staples tour started in 1950 in Chicago and will make its next stop here on November 20, 2021.

Support for this concert will be provided by Chicago alt-country favorite Kelly Hogan. Kelly Hogan has released albums on local imprint Bloodshot Records and has collaborated with artists such as Neko Case, The Mekons, Tortoise, and Mavis Staples.

Proceeds from this concert event will directly benefit the near 40,000 individuals Beyond Hunger serves across Chicagoland. Located in the near-west suburbs of Chicago, Beyond Hunger provides hunger relief and essential programming to residents of 13 zip codes, including the West Side of Chicago and many of its surrounding suburbs.
